Resting on the Nature Trail
Here's Rowan observing and preparing to photograph a cranefly with his JamCam. My dad and I are thinking about epoxying a ring so he could put a macro lens or filter on there. See one of his other spots here.

It was one of the hottest days on record -- one of the reasons we decided to go to the mountains today. I thought Kai would be dying in that long-sleeved, high-collared shirt and long pants, but decided to let him figure it out. We had plenty of sunblock and a pair of swim trunks in the car if he got really hot. It turned out he was the only one who got away moderately unscathed from the biting flies. I felt pretty silly and itchy in my shorts and t-shirt.
We went back to Forgotten Valley today to have lunch. Here's a view of the pond that the boys call "The Lake of A Hundred Damselflies". I think there are more likely a million-zillion.
Our insect repellant worked great on the mosquitoes but had no noticable effect on biting flies. Ouch. The Park Ranger says the flies start biting for a week or so every year about this time. They certainly weren't out last Sunday.
