This letter was sent back to Theo's co-workers on July 31st. He did a better job of writing about what went on, so I asked for his letters to repost here. Rule one for visiting Beijing: always carry an umbrella. Yesterday it was sunny, humid and scorching hot, and the umbrellas were sun shades; today it rained all day (more typical for summer, I'm told) and the umbrella vendors swarm anyone who steps out of a bus or subway without something to shield them from the wet.
Rule two: Children are universal passports. We're getting along all right, though I'm tired enough to prefer hanging around the hotel, while Rachel likes going out to shop and explore. The kids get us lots of smiles -- as a man with two sons, I'm considered quite blessed. Kai poses for photos with strangers, while Rowan trades English for Mandarin lessons.
We'll be in Beijing another day, and plan a bus ride to see the Great Wall along with a tour of the local temples. The kids will bring along their GameBoys so that they can skip the annoying cultural stuff. Then the next day we leave for the orphanage.
